Rodent, Rabbit & Ferret

Laboratory animal health monitoring is essential to ascertain the health status of animal colonies, to maintain the health of laboratory animals and to assure the integrity of your research. A complete comprehensive monitoring program for a facility includes serology, PCR, whole animal examination, parasitology, bacteriology, histopathology, and environmental monitoring.

Below are the main offerings for rodents, rabbits and ferrets:

Serology

We test for the presence of antibody to infectious agents in the serum of mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, and rabbits. Our methodologies include Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), Indirect Fluorescent Antibody (IFA), Hemagglutination Inhibition (HAI), and Western Blot (WB). Confirmatory testing is provided to our clients at no cost. Please contact us to discuss custom profiles or your unique testing needs. See Submission forms & shipping instructions.

PCR Assays

BioReliance offers molecular detection of many pathogens including viruses, bacteria, and protozoa. Click here for a list of pathogens that we test for.

Cell Line Testing

All biologicals derived from mice or murine cell lines are potential sources of murine viruses, which can become active when injected into mice, rats or hamsters. Murine virus outbreaks are a major concern for animal facilities, and many institutions require that materials of murine origin be certified free of viral agents before use in animal studies.

Non-GLP MAP-IT

  • BioReliance’s Lab Animal Diagnostic Services (LADS) now offers the Molecular Antigen PCR Identification Test (MAP-IT) to help you maintain a pathogen-free facility
  • MAP-IT testing panels are offered for mice, rats and hamsters

Non-GLP Cell Line Testing

  • Antibody production tests are offered for mice, rats and hamsters
  • Mycoplasma testing is also offered

Reagents

Animal Health Services at BioReliance can provide a variety of reagents to our clients.  Click here for a list of reagents that we offer.

BioReliance offers:

  • West Nile Virus Research Reagents

Monoclonal antibodies against West Nile Virus protein E are available. All are suitable for ELISA and Western Blot applications. Reagents are for research and development purposes only.

  • Reagents for Rodent Health Monitoring

Positive control sera for in-house ELISA and Western Blot applications are available. These control sera from polyclonal antibodies were developed in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Sera from mice and rats are available. Reagents are for research and development purposes only.

  • Coated ELISA Plates

96-well plates coated with positive sera are available. Each plate is sufficient for 48 tests, with 48 wells of control antigen that has been titrated and inactivated. Plates from mice and rats are available.

Comprehensive Animal Health Service (CAHS)

A modern, well equipped necropsy laboratory is at the center of a suite of labs that provides complete bacteriology, histopathology, clinical pathology, parasitology, tissue banking, and customized studies for a wide range of laboratory animals including rodents, rabbits, non-human primates, dogs, cats and exotic species. The lab’s focus is on client service, quality results, and rapid turnaround times. Click here for a list of organisms that we routinely test.
