The safety testing of cell substrates for the presence of viruses in biotechnology products is an important issue and is required by regulatory agencies world-wide.

Back to In Vivo Testing
The antibody production test is a sensitive method for detecting adventitious rodent viruses. Some rodent viruses have been shown to replicate in vitro in human and primate cell lines. The rodent lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus is a known human pathogen. The antibody production test is, therefore, essential for the safety assessment of rodent cell - derived and ascites -based products. The antibody production test is also a valuable assay for monitoring the health of animal colonies. In principle, if the test article contained a specific virus, specific antibodies against the virus would be detected by serologic analysis. If the test article were virus free, no specific antibodies would be detected in the sera of the test models.
